My mom’s dad, who passed away from a heart attack when she was 13, had had this Lazy Boy recliner and it stayed in our family, used often by all of us and featured in countless photos. My brother and I were rocked in it, played on it, slept in it and received much love in it.
After my mom and stepdad built their house in the late 1990s, it went into the basement and stayed there. Ever a quality piece with a sentimental value, it was out of sight but not out of mind and whispers of getting it reupholstered occurred from time to time. Read on to see what we ended up doing with the chair.
When I found out I was pregnant, I knew I wanted the chair. It rocks, reclines, and has a nice wide seat for snuggling with kids. I also knew it was in great condition – furniture today is simply NOT made as good as items from the 1960s, 1970s, etc. I did not want to spend $1,000 on a “fancy” glider made of crappy plastic.
My mom drove the chair down to me, by way of the Outer Banks and Florida (to visit my brother and grandma, respectively). It stayed in our basement while I did research and gathered quotes on reupholstery. I ended up taking it to Metro Upholstery on Buford Highway at the recommendation of a friend. An incredibly local business run by a kind and helpful Korean couple, their price was more than fair compared to others and they gave us guidance on picking out our fabric.
We picked our fabric from Joann Fabrics, and ended up finding something we liked on clearance so we got a great deal on the price. It’s worth doing the research on fabric to ensure quality and durability – please reach out if you’re reading this and wondering where to start, as I’m happy to help!
Pregnant me (about 29 weeks) before the chair went in for its facelift.
About a month later, the chair was finished and I had tears in my eyes when I saw it. So special. The recline on the chair is a little finicky so we opted to not put it in the nursery right now and instead add it to our TV room, where it’s been a lovely and comfortable addition to our seating.
It was definitely worth the time spent researching, getting quotes, finding fabric and the money to have this treasured piece of family furniture in my home for what I hope is another long period of loving, quality use. <3
