Out of isolation and into beautiful Savannah, Georgia

After more than two months of quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were really missing our families. Everything now seems to have great risk but in actuality everything was already a risk. We believe that this virus is not going away, even with a vaccine. As time passes, more treatments are available, too. For us, it’s about finding ways to live with the virus that provide us some safety to mitigate the risk. We continue to limit our trips out and are glad to see businesses reopening in Georgia this month. We decided to plan a trip to Savannah over Memorial Day weekend, and when I saw how cheap some of the huge mansions were to rent, we decided to invite both of our parents. This mansion off of Forsyth Park was glorious. Stunning, grand, spacious, historic, and in a great location with modern conveniences. The lowest level was a separate apartment with two bedrooms. The main floor has soaring ceilings, beautiful staircase, living and dining areas, kitchen, spacious bedroom and two baths. The upstairs had three more large bedrooms each with ensuite bath. The master bathroom was the size of a small apartment with a lounge and wetbar area, and a deck. It was the perfect place to unwind, escape to a lush oasis and spend time with family in a house big enough for everyone to spread out as needed (very important!).

We honestly didn’t do too much this trip. Plenty of places were still closed and it was more about the company but we did take walks every day in Forsyth Park. Of course we had to get a photo under the Local 11Ten sign. We had our wedding reception here almost 6 years ago and always get a photo like this when we’re in town. Now we have our wonderful son with us. <3

Sean and I took a segway tour one morning with Kathy and John. It was a lot of fun and a great outdoor activity that felt as safe as it could be. Learned some new things about Savannah but quite surprised that I actually already knew a LOT of the history of this magical place. I love it so much.

Sean and I also had a date night! First one in months. We started out by meeting up with a former coworker of mine from UPS, Alexander, and his partner David at the top of the Bohemian Hotel. I love this place for it’s sweeping views of the Savannah River and bridge – perfect spot for watching the sun set and seeing the massive barges come and go.

Forsyth Park at night is calm, eery and serene all at once.

On Sunday, we went out for a family brunch and we all wore the American apparel Kathy had got for us. Yes, Harrison is wearing harem pants. SO CUTE!

The pics below reflect how lovely our time in the magnificent mansion was as we played games, laughed, shared meals, enjoyed the porch and some drinks, and even had live entertainment one night from the house across the street. Apparently, they’d been performing on their front porch for neighbors for awhile. It was a great little jazz group and so, so charming. Savannah just oozes this true Southern charm, and definitely has its own “porch culture.” What a memorable experience for all of us.

More walks in Forsyth Park – our location was so perfect!

On our last night, Pablo worked a bit and took care of Harrison so me, Sean, my mom and Ron could go out just the four of us. We went to The Olde Pink House, a Savannah institution, on their first night back since being forced to close at the start of the pandemic. We were seated downstairs in the tavern (my favorite place in the restaurant) in a private room. Again – it’s about mitigating risk, not eliminating. We had good service, yummy drinks and delicious food. It was nice to be able to treat my parents to something special.

We walked along River Street after dinner and gawked at an enormous sailboat/yacht that was parked at the riverside. It was a cloudy night with a bright moon which gave the entire area a slightly spooky vibe. I loved it.

It was VERY hard to leave but I will say knowing that we could still see each other during this insanity was so good for us all. I want to do it again next year but the prices for the big mansions already seem to be up to their normal prices that are way out of our price range. To me, that has made this trip all the more special, wonderful, and memorable. <3
