Buford Highway 201: An Intermediate Guide

IMG_4350

This is the second post in a 2-post (for now) series on the amazing, delicious and unique neighborhood of Buford Highway in Atlanta. The first post covered great spots for beginners. This post is going a little further into the unusual and so I’m calling it an “intermediate” guide.

Of course, every person’s experience is going to be different so some of these may be very ordinary to you. I’m basing this on my own experience as well as feedback from others with whom I’ve dined at these spots. Continue reading

Buford Highway 101: A Beginner’s Guide

image

Buford Highway – known throughout Metro Atlanta and beyond as a mecca for ethnic cuisine, cheap eats, international grocery stores and boutiques selling foreign fashions. While the highway stretches almost 50 miles from Atlanta to Buford, GA, the area that continues to be featured in shows like Anthony Bourdain’s The Layover begins just north of Midtown Atlanta and runs through Chamblee, Doraville and Norcross

Within this area, there are over 1,000 immigrant-owned businesses. It can be very intimidating and daunting for a person to figure out where to eat or shop in this area. In some of the restaurants, little to no English is spoken and the menus are printed in the native language. And even in the more popular restaurants, how do you know what’s good?

In this mini-series, I’ll take you through some popular BuHi restaurants and give tips on what to order so you can try them out armed with plenty of knowledge and no longer intimidated. New experiences are important and they don’t have to be scary! Continue reading

Fun in Florida with Family and Friends

IMG_2704_2I can’t resist alliteration. 😉

That said, we did have a great time with our family and friends over Memorial Day weekend. We drove down Friday afternoon and stayed with Sean’s dad and stepmom. We had sushi for dinner and played cards. It was a nice event of catching up and celebrating the closing of our new house!

The next morning we headed to my grandparent’s house after a yummy breakfast of homemade bagels with lox and cream cheese. Continue reading

Getting Crafty: Custom Wedding Dog Collars

GRE_4558Sean and I love our sweet pups and are happy that they get along so well. Chelsea is 11 and Stella is 3 and while they’ve only known each other for about two and a half years, they play like they’ve been together forever!

I wanted to have them wear something matching during the wedding. They weren’t a part of the ceremony, but were with us throughout the first part of the day and for the festivities leading up to the wedding day. I didn’t want to get them dresses or shirts because I knew the weather would be warm.

I had the idea one day to wrap their collars with leftover fabric from my wedding dress and then add bows – the perfect solution! See how I did it: Continue reading

Wedding Week, Part 1: Family Vacation and Marriage License

IMG_0431I’ve been chronicling many parts of our wedding planning journey this past year. I’ve shared things like our engagement photos and party, my bachelorette party, and our fun cake tastings. It seemed to only make sense to also share the wonderful festivities that took place during our amazing wedding week in Tybee Island and Savannah, Georgia.

We rented a gorgeous house on Tybee Island and had my mom, stepdad, dad, brother, brother’s fiance, aunt, and grandparents stay there as well as Sean’s mom and stepdad. His aunt, uncle and cousin rented a house less than a block away.  Continue reading

My Bachelorette Party: 5 Stops in Decatur, GA

IMG_9209

I’m not having a traditional wedding so I struggled with the idea of having a bachelorette party. We had already had our big “party” for our wedding in the form of an engagement party back in May. A bachelorette party in August was a little out of order of the usual way of things.

And then I said “oh well, who cares?!?”

I enlisted the help of Cherish and Krista who will also be at my wedding next month to help plan the bash. They kept most of the details hidden from me which was great because I was able to be pleasantly surprised on the day.  Continue reading

Opening Night at Wild Heaven Craft Beers

IMG_8212Let me start by saying I’m not an expert on beer. I’m sure there are many others writing critiques of Wild Heaven beers right now, but that’s not what this post will cover. I love to support local and small businesses of all kinds – and that includes breweries! This new spot is long-awaited and we were thrilled to be there on the opening night. Continue reading
