The week after we got back from the Outer Banks, I decided to check the guesthouse we usually stay at in Asheville when we visit to see if they had any availability this fall. I knew it was a long shot, since it’s peak color season but I tried anyway. And there was a room! One room for the following weekend, and at an unbelievably low rate (turns out there’d been a glitch in their system that allowed me to book at almost 50% off!). I booked and we were all set to spend a mid-October weekend in the lovely mountain town. Continue reading

Don’t Buy a Fitbit – They Don’t Stand Behind Their Products
I got my Fitbit Charge HR in April 2015. I didn’t wear it every day – I’d say it was used 9 months of the past 18 months and I am not into any kind of extreme sports. It had never been submerged in water, stepped on or even dropped on the ground. When I went to use it most recently, I was taking the charger off and the black piece of plastic that goes around the back and the sides, and has the button on it broke off. It looked like the glue wore off or something and it would no longer hold the charger in place nor would it track steps anymore when I put it on. It was broken.
In talking with customer service, several (not good) things were revealed, which I will include verbatim here. Continue reading
Outer Banks Family Vacation 2016
My mom, stepdad Ron, brother Tyler and I have been vacationing in the beautiful and remote Outer Banks of North Carolina for over 20 years. Grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends have all joined at times over the years, adding to the memories. My mom and stepdad got married on the beach in front of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse back in 1997.
This year, Tyler and his wife (my sister-in-law) Kym planned the vacation for their sides of the family. While there were several last-minute cancellations on both sides, we ended up with a great group – Kym’s grandparents, brother and sister-in-law and nieces and nephew, and my mom and Ron and me and Sean. They got an incredible house right on the ocean with 11 bedrooms, an enormous kitchen, pool with deck and tiki bar, hot tub, and lower-level game room. Perfect set up for a fun week! Continue reading
Anything is POSSIBLE
I’m not very open on social media. I pretty much only share the good stuff – which most people do. And though this is ultimately a “good” story, I decided to share what I’ve been up to these past few months and some of the tough things I’ve taken on.
When I’m completely honest with myself, I knew 3 weeks after my start date at UPS on August 26, 2013 that I’d made a mistake leaving my old job. Layers of bureaucracy and a very conservative culture made for a pretty miserable work environment for my open-minded and liberal self. I could go into more detail but I won’t. It’s not really necessary for this story for me to go on about all the ways UPS and the jobs I had there weren’t right for me.
While I probably stayed too long, I had major life events happening outside of work that took most of my focus – our engagement and wedding, honeymoon, selling a house, buying a house and moving. Once the dust settled from our move last summer, though, the unhappiness that had always been there about work came rushing to the surface. By the beginning of this year, it was obvious that it was negatively impacting me physically, emotionally and mentally – and affecting my relationship with my husband. Being unhappy and unfulfilled at a place where I was spending most of my waking hours was not working for me. I’d been interviewing for other jobs and while I was well-connected and qualified for those jobs, I wasn’t getting them. I wasn’t confident or happy and I believe it came across in my interviews no matter how positive I tried to be. I knew I needed to make a big change.
I began running numbers, going through our finances and tracking our spending more closely. I came up with a plan and I talked to Sean. This was at the beginning of February. We agreed that if I didn’t have a new job by the middle of April, after our big trip to Europe, I would put in my two weeks notice. I didn’t find another job and so at the end of April, I quit my job at UPS.

Our First “Atlanta Food Swap” Event
We’ve been making kombucha at home for a while now and felt like it was getting to the point where we’d like some objective feedback and to see if it’s in-demand. We’re not ready to sell it so the Atlanta Food Swap seemed like the perfect next step for us as we hone this craft beverage. Sean and I work together on all our batches of kombucha and think that our Lavender-Mint Kombucha is our best and most unique flavor to date. So that’s what’s going to the swap later today. I’ll probably update this post with a report on how it went, but wanted to get this up in case we had site visitors from the event today.
Welcome! Thanks for stopping by! If you’re interested in potentially ordering some kombucha, leave a comment. All kombucha is made-to-order and can take 1-2 weeks.
Update: The Swap Meet was great! There were all kinds of items from fresh produce to canned jams and jellies and handmade toys to spice blends. We got a lot of stuff and had a wonderful time meeting everyone and learning about their crafts and hobbies.

This year, we did some of our favorites establishing them even more as traditions but we also did a few new things that were really fun. Read on! Continue reading
Out and About: Being a tourist in my own city
It’s always nice when friends come to town for a visit. I also like it because I often end up getting to be a tourist in my own city by doing different things than I normally do. This past weekend with Lindsey and Adeline was no exception. Continue reading
Easy Refrigerator Pickles
Ah, summer produce. It’s here in all its glory and abundance. In past summers, I’ve had great success with cucumbers, often having many more at one time than we could eat. This summer is our first one with a garden at our new house, so it’s been a learning experience on what will grow, where the best sun is in our yard, etc. I’ve still gotten quite a few cucumbers from just a couple of plants but they’ve been very small. I don’t think they’re getting quite enough sun but they’re still tasty.
One of my favorite things to do with “too many” cucumbers to make refrigerator dill pickles. They keep in the fridge for a few months (but are generally best within the first few weeks) and are a great snack. I’ve experimented with a few different recipes and have finally put together the one that I think delivers the most crunch and flavor while being QUICK and EASY! Continue reading
