What to do with lots of fresh basil from the garden this summer? Use it to make a delicious cocktail, of course! Basil-lemonade is a flavor combination I’ve seen popping up all over the place recently, but I’ve been making this concoction for over a year already and it’s delicious.
While this drink includes standard items like fresh lemons, club soda, and fresh basil, it also includes an ingredient that makes it unique and gives it even more flavor: basil-infused simple syrup.
Last summer I had so much basil and there are only so many Caprese salads a girl can eat (well, maybe not – I just wanted to try something new!).
I wanted to find another way to use a lot of basil that I would enjoy. And so, basil-infused simple syrup and the Basil Lemonade Cocktail was born.
I love drinking this by the pool, or making a large batch to take to a BBQ.

- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 handful fresh basil
- Juice of 4 lemons
- 4 oz vodka (I use SKYY)
- Simple syrup from above (use to taste - more if you like it sweeter, less if you don't)
- 16-20 ounces of club soda (or more to taste)
- 1 lemon, sliced for garnish
- 6-8 basil leaves
- Combine water, sugar and basil in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Let simmer for a few minutes, then strain out basil and set aside.
- Add sliced lemons and basil leaves to four highball glasses
- In a cocktail mixer, juice four lemons
- Add four ounces of vodka and about half the club soda
- Add the simple syrup, about 1/3 at a time, tasting as you go
- Add the rest of the club soda and more simple syrup, if desired
- Put lid on cocktail mixer and shake
- Strain into highball glasses and serve
- Simple syrup can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about 7-10 days
