Family Time in Savannah, Georgia

My entire family loves Savannah! It’s less than a four-hour drive from Atlanta and for my brother and Kym, slightly less than the time it takes to drive to Atlanta so it was the perfect meeting spot for a fall getaway. With summer temperatures! It was also Harrison’s FIRST trip to our special city – site of our wedding and many other fabulous adventures. We brought Daniela with us so she could experience this beautiful place, and let us have a night out with Tyler and Kym. Our first stop Friday midday was for lunch at The Vault – an excellent Asian-fusion restaurant in a more “locals” part of town called SoFo (South of Forsyth Park). We’ve been many times and always had good experiences. This time, Sean and I both had a seafood coconut soup. Not only was it delicious but Harrison tried it and loved it too. Couldn’t get enough.

After lunch, we dropped Daniela off downtown to explore and we headed over to Two Tides Brewing – a new spot – to try some beers. Much of what we had was really tasty and Sean bought a few cans to bring home. Very friendly staff and cool space with fun rooms on the 2nd floor of an old Victorian.

Our Airbnb was one block off of Forsyth Park and right next to Tulum Cantina – in the old Leocci’s spot that was the sight of many lovely dinners including for my bachelorette night back in 2014! The Airbnb was perfect. Open and modern kitchen, living and dining area, 2 spacious bedrooms and 1.5 renovated bathrooms. Oh! And a nice patio outside.

Tyler, Kym, Sean and I headed out Friday night for a joint wedding anniversary celebration. We share the same anniversary, September 12, so this was a fun outing. First stop was drinks at Scottish pub Molly MacPherson’s and then dinner next door at A.lure.

We had a great dinner at A.lure. I had the filet with asparagus and blue cheese potato gratin, paired with a nice Rioja. Yum!

After dinner, we went to Topdeck bar for views of the Savannah River. Ahhh, so relaxing and beautiful. A stroll along River Street and an ice cream topped off the evening.

Sean and I got to sleep in the next morning until 9! Once Daniela came back from the park with Harrison, I headed out to meet Tyler and Kym at the farmers market. We checked out lots of local goods and then got popsicles – mine was a lime cantaloupe flavor. Yummy!

My brother took some photos of us back the Airbnb and we hung out for a bit before hopping on the free trolley (yes, this is new and yes, this is NICE!) to downtown.

Lunch was at another of our faves – Vinnie Van Go-Gos in City Market. It was a warm day but cool enough in the shade so we sat outside. Harrison was perfect – enjoyed the walk, the people-watching and the food. I love this pizza. So darn good.

After lunch, Harrison helped his Aunt Kym shop, and made his first appearance at Paris Market where I did not buy him any kid items because they were very pricey!

A bit more walking, a stop at Nourish for my resupply of lotions, soaps and candles, and a trolley ride later we were back at the Airbnb for a little rest.

The Savannah Jazz Festival was going on during the weekend so we went over to check it out and fed Harrison his dinner on a blanket in the park. It was a perfect evening – great music, family time, and Leopold’s Ice Cream for dinner for me and Sean! 😉 (We did have leftover pizza for actual dinner later).

This picture is funny because 1) Sometimes Sean and I do this Star Trek symbol for laughs and actual good wishes and 2) my brother CAN’T do it – look closely! LOL! Live long and prosper, y’all!

After Harrison went to bed, we hung out back at the Airbnb and could still hear the music from the festival which was nice. Tyler and Kym went to dinner at Tulum Cantina and Cocina next door and said it was great – so check it out if you’re in the area.

Sunday morning we FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY made it Wormsloe Historic site. It’s been on the list for SO LONG. It was a glorious day and, as you can see from the photos, this was a stunning place. The seemingly endless canopy of live oaks, followed by trails leading to the tranquil marshes is truly incredible. Wow. Could have spent much more time here and would love to return on another visit.

After Wormsloe, we went to lunch at The Public Kitchen and Bar (sister restaurant to Local 11Ten where we had our wedding cocktail hour and reception). After lunch, we said some very sad goodbyes – I HATE leaving my brother and sis-in-law – and got on the road back to Atlanta. Can’t wait to see my fam and Savannah again. 🙂
