For Christmas 2019, Sean got me (well, planned for me) a weekend in New Haven, CT to visit our friends Beth and JR. Sean had gotten to see them on a work trip he’d had up there but I had yet to visit them after their move up north in October 2018. We planned the trip for the first weekend in March, 2020. I was hoping for snow!
It did not snow but it was really chilly the day I arrived and the next day so I was happy. 🙂 Their house is adorable, set in a perfectly quaint New England neighborhood.
JR made cocktails which were ready on our arrival from the airport. And we had TDS’s sweet potato and beef tacos with homemade corn tortillas. So yummy!
Beth and JR can walk to all sorts of cool places from their house so we headed over to August for wine after dinner.
Saturday morning with no kid meant….I SLEPT IN!!! And took my time getting ready!! It was glorious. We went for an early lunch at Frank Pepe’s to try the super famous clam pie.
I was also told a Foxon Park soda was tradition so had the lemon.
Clam pie was delicious. Garlicky, salty, chewy – what’s not to like?
Also had the tomato pie which was also great.
After lunch, our plans included a walking tour of Yale University. It was a perfect sunny day to take in all the history and architecture. I loved the libraries – both were so beautiful but so different from each other with one bring Gothic and the other being very modern.
We took a rest after the tour and stopped in at a local bookshop and cafe for a glass of wine and a snack. I don’t usually day-drink but as this was a trip for me with no responsibilities, I went for it. 😉
We then went to the Yale Art Museum which had a collection of Picasso, Monet and Degas paintings in addition to some cool special sections.
We had an early dinner at Miya’s – a local sushi restaurant that got ingredients from local sustainable farms. It was such a unique experience and everything was delicious. The place was getting ready to close permanently, too, so I felt lucky to get to try it while in town.
After dinner, we had quality time talking and drinking wine back at the house. I stayed up late and slept in again – so nice!
On Sunday, we went to the ocean. There was a small trail we walked before hitting up the row of Mexican food trucks for tacos, tortas and nachos. Then we went out to one of the public beaches and it was SO nostalgic. Reminded me of the many beaches with lighthouses on Lake Erie that we would frequent when I was kid, There was a big recreation building that housed a carousel. So, so New England and I absolutely loved the views. Beautiful!
Saying good bye to these two amazing people who I’m so lucky to have as friends. Hope we can see each other again soon. <3
