Gardening in the Fall

67958_504596543860_1485152912_nAfter I concluded my summer garden series last month, I thought that I would be done with growing vegetables and herbs until the spring. However, a friend informed me that places like Pike Nursery carry items that will grow in the appropriate season. I was shopping for mums and noticed all sorts of great herbs and veggies and so I decided to plant some for the fall. This time, though, I didn’t do them in pots instead I put them right in the ground.

Sean and I pulled weeds and loosened the soil a few weeks ago. We added planting soil, mushroom compost and soil conditioner when we planted the herbs and veggies. Here are some pictures of the finished products:

Chives, oregano, mint and parsley – it doesn’t look like much now, but I’m hoping it fills in for tasty herbs all winter.

Lemon thyme – this has been growing really well already.

Parsley, lavender and English thyme. I’m trying to see how my lavender does once it’s out of the pots. I always felt like it wasn’t growing that well and I’m hoping access to better drainage and more air will help it along.

I LOVE lantanas and they were on sale at Pike, so I picked one up to plant along with the other two I already have. The ones I have from the summer have purple and yellow blooms and I replanted them in the ground from pots. We’ll see how they do.

I’m most excited about my dinosaur kale – and I’m open to any recommendations on recipes to try with this awesome leafy green.

In addition to the garden plants, I did also get some mums and pansies for my pots. They look great on our porch at full bloom – the colors are just stunning! And I’ve still got my pot with rosemary and oregano.

As you can tell, I’m really excited about my fall plants. Have you planted anything awesome this season?
