New Bites: Food Terminal

The owners of local Atlanta restaurants Top Spice and Sweet Hut Bakery – both very successful with multiple locations – opened a Malaysian + Asian street food-focused restaurant to Buford Highway called Food Terminal. After driving by it on several occasions and seeing all the Atlanta food bloggers sharing yummy-looking photos from all the media events, we decided we had to try it sooner rather than later.

We went on a week night and there is plenty of parking in the large lot that also has a supermarket and a few more restaurants. The inside of Food Terminal is huge and beautiful – sleek, modern, colorful, and filled with a good energy.IMG_4639IMG_4636IMG_4637IMG_4620

The menu is like a magazine (see the featured photo of my post for reference) and is massive in its offerings. It takes a good bit of time to go through. They currently didn’t have their alcohol license yet when we were there, so we opted for a specialty mocktail and they did invite us to bring in our own alcohol next time. I had the Lemongrass Lime soda and it was refreshing, not too sweet and went well with all of our food.IMG_4621

We started with the Salmon Teriyaki skewers and they were perfectly cooked with a sauce that had lots of flavor.IMG_4622

Next up were the Lemongrass Pork Crispy Baos – we each ordered one. I thought these were really tasty and a good value.IMG_4627

I ordered the Wonton Mee for my main course, which was a chicken and shrimp broth with shrimp and pork wontons, thin noodles, bok choy, spring onions and fried onions. None of the food is expensive but our main courses were where the real value was – at $8.50 I thought this was a steal. Especially since I couldn’t finish it all! It was light but still flavorful and benefitted from the addition of a little sriracha sauce.IMG_4623

Sean ordered one of the specialty menu items that I’d seen in many Yelp reviews and on Instagram from local food bloggers – Grandma Wonton BBQ Pork. It was Cantonese tossed noodle with wonton, bok choy, bean sprout, spring onion, fried shallot and a special BBQ recipe topped with an egg. Sean said it was pretty ok – filling and satisfying but not particularly memorable. IMG_4635

Having been to other Malaysian restaurants, it seems the food is beautiful and menus have tons of options but flavors are mild. It’s completely fine, of course, but you should know that’s what it’s like going in. That said, Food Terminal was a fun dining experience and a great value. I’d definitely return again in a few months to see how this new spot is progressing.IMG_4633
