After a hiatus of several years, Gu’s Dumplings returned to Buford Highway, Atlanta’s ethnic food “mecca,” as Gu’s Kitchen for a focus beyond dumplings and into Szechuan street food. We tried it out for the first time in December, and went back two more times in quick succession – one of those times being for lunch on Christmas Day 2018! Safe to say we really, really love this place and are glad for this addition to so many other delicious Buford Highway spots. We’ve sampled many items off the menu – read on to see which ones we like best.
The restaurant is at the corner of Chamblee Tucker Rd and Buford Highway, in a plaza which houses Penang Malaysian and other restaurants and businesses.
On our first visit, we started with the homemade sweet and spicy thick noodles. The noodles were served cold and were chewy and flavorful with the exact right amount of heat. We LOVE this dish and highly recommend it to anyone.
The Szechuan Beef Noodles soup has a deliciously rich broth, egg noodles, Szechuan peppers, bok choy and incredibly tender beef. I love noodle soups and this one has easily taken a top spot on my list of favorites in town.
Christmas Day noms at Gu’s! 😉
Enjoying the homemade sweet and spicy thick noodles.
We couldn’t come to Gu’s and not get dumplings – the very thing that made them famous! We got the pork ones and let me tell you these are the real deal. Homemade and yummy – perfect comfort food.
On our second visit to Gu’s Kitchen, we tried the Szechuan Chicken Po ‘Boy. Both Sean and I agreed this was just okay – not a lot of flavor at least compared to the other dishes.
On our third visit, we decided to try some of the special dishes starting with this lotus root stir-fry. It came out to us “family style” and could have easily served 4-6 people. It was so tasty and unique – a little spicy, a little sweet, a good bit nutty.
The Spicy Stir-fried Fish is always on the menu and while it was tasty, it was too big a portion for the two of us. It also didn’t have as much of the ginger/sesame/Szechuan pepper flavors as we’d hoped for based on the description. Worth a try!
The Chengdu Cold Noodles are another menu item from their first location years ago. The presentation is awesome and they taste even better than they look! I know these are extremely popular but I preferred the thick noodles from our earlier visit. However, I don’t think you’d be disappointed with either dish!
Have you been to Gu’s Kitchen yet? What did you think?
