Ah, Buford Highway. You never disappoint and in the case of Las Delicias de al Abuela, you exceed expectations. This Colombian restaurant recently moved to the building right next door to the Buford Highway Farmers Market and is always busy! That’s a good sign so Sean and I decided to check it out a few weeks ago while his mom was in town.
Any restaurant with “grandma” in the name HAS to be good, right?
Inside was spacious, with a large dining room upfront and a bar area in the back. We spoke to our server mostly in Spanish, although I’m sure she was humoring us but we got to practice and that’s what counts! Everyone was drinking these naranja drinks so of course I had to know what they were – various flavors of fruit juice. I got passionfruit. So darn delicious and refreshing.
We started with empanadas that were forgettable and an arepa relleno de queso (corn pancake with cheese) that was not.
Sean and his mom shared a mixed plate with chicken, chicharrones, smoked sausage, blood sausage, plantains, etc. What a feast!
I had a marinated skirt steak that came with an entire separate plate of rice, french fries, avocado, tomato and plantain. Wowza. I’d heard that Colombian was very meat-and-potato centric – it’s the truth!
All the meats were flavorful and delicious. If you’re looking for a fun atmosphere that is family-friendly by day and a bit more loud by night, with good food with generous portions at low prices – this spot is a win. It’s also a win if you’re just looking to try something new, like we were.
Viva La Buford Highway!
