Sean and I always like to go on a double-date with my brother and sister-in-law when we’re visiting family in the Outer Banks. We try to eat at new restaurants and this time was no exception. We were able to get a reservation for a late seating at the Salt Box Cafe on Colington Island – and we had a terrific meal and experience!
The Salt Box Cafe has an unassuming front but a lovely outdoor space and charming, intimate interior.
We started with the cheese board which was the perfect appetizer to share between the four of us.Tyler and KymMe and Sean. <3
I had the NY Strip with asparagus and crunchy potato wedges. The steak was delicious – tender and perfectly seasoned.
Sean had the best dish of the night though with a rich and creamy but not too heavy risotto.
Tyler had the fish of the day special which was a pan-seared flounder with broccolini and a carrot-ginger puree. It was a light and flavorful dish.
And Kym had the pork dish with mashed potatoes, asparagus and berry sauce with nice umami flavors.
As you can see, this place has fantastic menu options and the menus change frequently. The food was great – inventive mixed with traditional, and all high-quality ingredients. We could tell they were short-staffed but they still did an excellent job to ensure a good experience. Highly recommend and would definitely return.
