Wedding Planning in Savannah: Cake Tastings and More!

IMG_8260I’d heard that cake tastings were a fun and favorite part of many couples’ wedding planning. After a weekend in Savannah for more wedding planning that included two awesome tastings, I have to agree!

We had a variety of flavors including chocolate, red velvet, strawberry and carrot with buttercream, cream cheese and whipped frostings – and all were delicious. I’m sure you’re wondering which one we ended up choosing…

…But I’m going to keep the cake flavors we chose a secret until the wedding so our guests will be surprised when they see the menu with their options. Hehe. But, read on to see which bakery we are using.

Our first tasting was at Baker’s Pride, a cute bake shop in Midtown Savannah. We received great service and a dozen cupcakes – each of six flavors with buttercream and cream cheese frosting. So. much. cake. IMG_8254

Our next tasting was at Savannah Rum Runners Bakery & Cafe. We also received great service here – we arrived early and they accommodated us graciously. The tasting was smaller portions, which was nice. We definitely felt we had too much left from the first one – we ended up giving 6 cupcakes to the staff at the hotel!IMG_8262

We decided on Savannah Rum Runners to make our wedding cake and we are SO excited to offer three flavors to our guests on our wedding day. IMG_8278

After our wonderful and fun cake tasting experience, we headed out for some relaxation on the beach and in the sea on Tybee Island. It was a hot and sunny day – perfect for catching a few rays and a quick swim.IMG_8280

We got off the beach just in time to miss a massive thunderstorm and downpour. Whew! After a quick nap at the hotel, we were ready for a night out on the town. We love staying in the Historic District so we can walk everywhere. The Holiday Inn off of MLK, Jr. was the perfect spot.

We walked to Molly McPherson’s pub for a drink and watched a bit of the World Cup before heading over to Ampersand for dinner. This new restaurant had turned up in search results for places nearby and – with an interesting menu – we figured we’d give it a try.IMG_8284

A little off the beaten path of the Historic District, this place is a gem at the end of Congress Street at MLK, Jr. The entrees were reasonably priced and delicious. Sean had a seafood trio with a scallop and truffle aioli and I had a version of Pernil with perfectly slow-cooked pork, arugula and tomatoes over cheddar grits – for only $13! We had started with a version of caprese salad and added a side of brussels sprouts to our entrees. The wine was good, the decor was a mix of modern and rustic and our server was great. This place won’t stay secret and quiet during dinner for long!IMG_8326

After dinner we walked over to Circa 1875, a wonderful Parisian-style bar. It was so authentic it felt like being back in Paris – complete with French cafe music. Sean and I sat at the bar and ordered drinks with the intent to visit another place but we liked it so much we stayed for another round.

When we first started dating, he told me he didn’t care for Savannah that much based on past experiences. We’ve now been three times in a year and he commented during this trip that each visit is a different experience. That’s why I love this town and I love that I know it well enough to vary it up like that each time! 🙂IMG_8300

We left Circa 1875 and were hit by a wall of heat. There is only one true remedy for that in Savannah and it’s ice cream from Leopold’s! I got Thin Mints n Cream and Sean got a yummy peanut butter flavor and we enjoyed our cold treat on the walk back to the hotel. Yum!IMG_8303

On Sunday, we got up early and had breakfast at Clary’s Cafe, a little dive made famous in the movie “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” (one of my favorite films of all time!). It’s fast, fairly inexpensive and good – what more could you want from a spot for a quick breakfast?IMG_8304

We strolled a few blocks over to Forsyth Park after our meal to kill some time before meeting with our wedding photographer to go over details for the wedding day. I never get sick of walking around this beautiful park. The fountain is always stunning.IMG_8308

The hydrangeas, my favorite flower, were in full bloom and so beautiful.IMG_8311

We walked by the fragrant garden and peeked in at the lovely roses.IMG_8314IMG_8316

We had a great meeting with our photographer and his wife/manager, then headed downtown for a little shopping at our favorite spots – Tea and Spice Exchange, Paris Market and Nourish, along with some caffeine from The Coffee Fox.

For lunch, we decided to try a new spot that I’d heard about from friends called Tequila’s Town. We had another wonderful meal – the margaritas were awesome and my fish tacos were among the very best I’ve ever had. IMG_8327

We headed back to Atlanta after our lunch. It was a whirlwind weekend but so much fun! I cannot WAIT to be in Tybee/Savannah for an entire week for our wedding later this year. Wahoo!
